Obituary for Maren Thiesen

Maren THIESEN

February 2, 1926 ~ January 20, 2020 (age 93)

Maren Thiesen was born Maren Rasmussen Feb 2, 1926 in Denmark. She was the 5th child of 13. She came to Vancouver BC Canada in 1957 and worked as an RN with polio patients. She was a devoted, competent, alert practitioner who loved her career.

In 1959 she married Aage Christiansen Thiesen and raised two daughters with him. She is survived by Linda Thiesen of Tsawassen BC and Karin Wardle of Fernie BC. (Aage sadly left us in 1990). Also, by her adoring grandchildren Finn, Kaya, Valerie, Janice and Ian.

Maren’s main focus in life was the welfare of others around her. You could never sit at a dinner table with her and have your plate empty. She would always offer you her own food before even thinking about eating without you.

After leaving her nursing career she had a daycare home where countless children were looked after in an attentive caring loving home atmosphere. All of these children had an amazing childhood because of Maren’s care. She also was always aware of the needs of her neighbours. The family lived in a very diverse neighbourhood of East Vancouver with every household being represented by a different nationality: Hungarian, British, Scottish, Portuguese, Malaysian, Swiss, Italian, Chinese, Irish, ….it truly was a United Nations neighbourhood. Many of the neighbours were elderly and they were well taken care of by Maren and her husband. She was a member of the Danish Lutheran Church in Vancouver and served there as well. She made sure her daughters learned to help out with serving the needs of others.

Maren loved to make people laugh and never took herself seriously. She never worried about her own needs but would be deeply troubled by the concerns of others. One of her guiding principles was: “It’s so important to be good to each other in this life.”

She passed away Jan 20, 2020 at 93 in Fernie BC. Plans for a memorial service are still being determined. They will be late February or early March. They will be in Fernie.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society.

Malcom “Mickey” Fredrick Snyder
July 21st, 1946 – February 2nd, 2020
It is with the heaviest of hearts that we share with all of you the sudden passing of our amazing Dad, Husband, Grandfather, Brother and Best Friend.
He was born with a sparkle in his eye and a mischievous grin that stayed with him his entire 73 years. His first love was truck driving and we literally had to pry the keys out of Dad’s hands when it was time to retire. He loved talking on the radio to his trucker friends and being a part of the ‘trucker family.’ He will always be known as “two stack pete with Mickey in the seat”. When he was asked to service the trucks on Saturdays, he was like a little kid in a candy shop wearing his dirtiest coveralls with grease under his fingernails.
Dad was the gentlest of souls and would love to have his family and friends around him. When the conversation would turn away from his direction, he would always try to catch a cat nap. We got such a kick out of hearing him snore in his “sleepy chair” or his favorite chair on the deck. We all loved spending time with Dad on the swing on the front porch watching the amazing view of the mountains while some sipped tea, some drank wine, and others shared Millers.
Dad loved the valley and he was a proud member of the Edgewater Legion. There is not a time we would go anywhere with Dad and he didn’t stop to talk to (and hug) at least 10 people! Everyone loved Mickey and he will be dearly missed.
Mickey leaves to mourn his fantastic wife, Linda, his children, Dwayne (Kristy, Tanner and Shayne), Murray (Robin, Stephanie, Kyle and Nicholas) and Marina (Brian, Zach and Evan), step-daughter Melanie (Craig, Caitlin and Ryan), his siblings Len, Lawrence and Shelley. We couldn’t possibly list all of Dad’s friends, but you know who you are. Dad was predeceased by his parents, his brother Rusty and grandson Todd.
Please come and share some laughs and stories with us at Mickey’s Celebration of Life on Saturday, February 22nd, 2020 at 11:00am at the Canadian Martyrs Church in Invermere.

Heather Louisa Sissons (Nee McNaughton)
April 18, 1954 – February 13, 2020
Heather passed peacefully away at home on February 13th, 2020 after a year long battle with cancer. Her fight ended the same way it began, with her husband and three sons at her side. Her courage and strength in the last year helped her family and friends prepare for her final days and no one could have faced the disease and treatment more courageously. Her goal was to enjoy this last Christmas with her family, and to see her latest granddaughter (Maddie Heather) enter the world. She achieved both these cherished goals.
Dave and Heather, married for 45 years, together they raised three sons (Blair, Scott and David). All were born in different provinces and she oversaw moving the family six times with a practicality and sense of adventure that made difficult things happen with ease. While raising a family Heather still always found a way to continue to practice as a Nurse. She worked at the major Cancer Treatment Centres in Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary and Winnipeg through a career that spanned 35 years. The ease to which she always found employment and the diversity of the areas she worked in is a testament to the high regard she was held in.
One of her greatest joys was watching her sons marry wonderful women. Blair to Sarah in 2011, Scott to Alex in 2016 and David to Sinead in 2017. Her GREATEST joy was being Nanna to their children. Tessa and Kate in Fredericton with Blair and Sarah and Kaiden, Bennett and Maddie with David and Sinead in Calgary. Heather was able to have two great family visits with them all together in 2019, this left a smile on her face from all the wonderful memories.
Heather is survived by her loving husband Dave, sons Blair, Scott and David, grandchildren, Tessa, Kate, Kaiden, Bennett and Maddie, sister Debbie and husband Ron and her brother Jim, many nieces and nephews, and friends. Predeceased by her parents Jim and Helen McNaughton. Heather will join her parents in their family plot at Medway Cemetery near Ilderton Ontario. Ilderton has always been a second home for her and our family.
A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, March 7th, 2020 at 11:00 am at Haskett Funeral Home in Lucan, Ontario.
Interment to follow lunch at Medway Cemetery, Middlesex Centre, Ontario. In lieu of flowers, please donate in Heathers honour to the Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada, https://www.braintumour.ca/ways-to-give/donate-now.
