It is with profound sadness that the family of Giuseppe Sacino announces his peaceful passing on Thursday, January 2, 2020 after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Giuseppe or Joe, as he was known was born on July 6, 1932 in Ruvo Del Monte, Potenza, Italy. He left Italy aboard the SS Vulcania ship on January 2, 1954 and arrived in Halifax, Nova Scotia some 8 days later. After arriving in Cranbrook, Joe worked many odd jobs until he got a position with the City of Cranbrook where he worked hard for 37 years. In 1963, after he secured employment and built his first home, Joe returned to Italy and there he met and married the love of his life Antonietta and later that year they settled in Cranbrook and raised two children.
Joe loved his family more than life itself and he worked hard to support them all. He was a long-time member of the Colombo Lodge heavily involved in its construction and spent many hours working, bartending and playing bocci. He loved the outdoors and had a passion for hunting, fishing, bocci, gardening, wine and sausage making, soccer, hockey, travelling, music, picnics and spending time with family and friends. He had a twinkle in his eye and a smile on his face and loved to joke around with those that came to visit.
Exactly 66 years to the day he left Italy to build a better life, he left his family on earth to find a better place in Heaven. Left to mourn his passing is his wife of 56 years Antonietta; his son Don, (Sandra Auld), his daughter Rosetta Bernava (Luigi) of Revelstoke and grandsons, Robert of Revelstoke and Adrian of Vancouver. Joe’s siblings, Vince (Irma) Sacino, of Cranbrook, Carmela (Rocco) Briuolo, of Qualicum Beach, B.C., Armando (Anna) Sacino of Luini, Italy, brother-in-law Mike Graziano of Cranbrook and many nieces and nephews throughout Canada and Italy and Switzerland. Joe was predeceased by his sister Rosa Graziano (2017) his father Donato Sacino (1986) his nephew Donato Graziano (1978) his mother Filomena Suozzi (1966) and a brother Gerardo Sacino (1953).
Rosary and Prayers for Joe will be held at Christ the Servant Parish Cranbrook on Thursday January 9th at 7:00 pm. A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, January 10th at 11:00 am at Christ The Servant Parish Cranbrook with entombment to follow at Westlawn Mausoleum. All are welcome to attend and celebrate his life.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Joe’s name can be made to Prostrate Cancer Foundation of B.C. https://www.prostatecancer.ca/Donate/Ways-to-Donate

December 20, 1933 ~ December 28, 2019 (age 86)

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, Mary Elizabeth Taylor. Mary was born on December 20, 1933 in Cumberland, BC to parents Ione (nee Morgan) and Sam English.

At the age of 8, the English family moved from Cumberland to Michel, BC. Following her high school graduation, Mary received her Nursing Degree from the Galt School of Nursing in Lethbridge and returned to Michel where she married her high school sweetheart, Dick Taylor. Mary worked at the Michel Natal Hospital and Dick worked at the local coal mines, together raising their four children. In 1965 the Taylor’s relocated to Sparwood where Mary worked as a nurse in Dr. Luzod’s office. Sadly, in 1981, Dick passed away, making Mary a young widow with four children to support. In 1986, Mary found love again with Don Laroy Anderson, and the couple remained together until his passing in June 2019.

Mary was a very social, energetic lady who enjoyed a variety of activities including badminton, camping, fishing, minor hockey, and golf, where she was proud to travel and participate in the Senior Games. She loved to sew and craft, sharing her talents and creations with others. Mary was also an active member of the Sparwood Senior Center and loved attending events there. She will always be remembered for making the best Welsh cakes in existence!

Mary had many dear friends; her grandchildren and great grandchildren were the light of her life. Rest in Peace, Mary …… until we meet again.

Mary is survived by her brother Ken (Joyce) English; her children: Donna (Frank) Leskosek, David (Sheri) Taylor, Shelly (Terry) Hume, and Garry (Char) Taylor; Don’s children: Randy Anderson (Kathleen Weare), Barb Dodds (Perry), Jody (Michael) Saad, and Kevin (Renee) Anderson. TERENCE CHARLES HYNES

Here lies

Terry Hynes

A simple man

of simple rhymes.

February 24, 1947 to January 15, 2020

It’s not often a person gets to write their own obituary, so being who I am, I cannot let this opportunity go past without at least contributing a few of my own thoughts as to what should be included here.

I won’t go into details and exploits of my growing up. I’ll leave that to others to embellish and describe, suffice to say that, like most kids, I was at times both a pleasure and a disappointment to my parents and my family.

I can however, honestly state, that as an adult, I never purposely tried to harm or mistreat other people, but to always be fair and consider their position both in social or business situations.

I was blessed very young in life to find and marry a woman that would stay with me and love me through all my ups and downs as well as provide me with three of the greatest children a man could wish for. Whom in turn would bless me with five fantastic grandchildren. What more can you want.

I have also been blessed with having a large and caring extended family. Many of whom became close to me like brothers and sisters. Ahh, my brothers!

Like most siblings growing up as children, the four of us would at times, argue, fight, and tease each other unmercifully. As the eldest, I’m sure I had the advantage most of the times. However, we gradually got to know each other as adults and, in most cases, developed a new respect for each other as grown men. Through many visits, holidays, and run-away fishing trips, we shared many adventures, laughs, and stories that brought us together as friends and brothers once more…

Unfortunately, Terry passed suddenly without completing some of the tasks he wanted, including the rest of his thoughts to this obituary so let us jump in…

Family get-togethers and visits over a glass of wine with a story or two will never be the same without Terry. At 72, Terry leaves behind his teenage love and wife of 53 years Jeannette, three children Jenelle (Henry), Jolayne (Kevin) and David, four grandchildren, Joshua, Nathan, Jayson & Grace plus step granddaughter Emma. He was predeceased by his parents Margaret Rey and Thomas Hynes. Terry was the eldest of four boys and leaves brothers Rick, Dale and Gordie to continue fishing without him.

Terry was a second generation, proud BC’er who as he said, lived a full and happy life with no regrets. He was an incredibly hard worker always providing for his family. He and Jeannette eloped on April 9, 1966 to Coeur d’ Alene Idaho and later that year welcomed the first of their three children. From Kelowna, to Victoria, to Prince George, to Cranbrook, to Kelowna and finally retirement in Grand Forks, Terry made good friends in each of the BC communities they lived.

There isn’t a road in BC that he hasn’t travelled on and all that knew him knew he always had a piece of his heart in the Klondike and the romance of the gold rush. He had a full and diverse career in the navy, as a welder, real-estate agent, businessman, heavy equipment salesman and most recently twice published author. Always dabbling in poetry and storytelling Terry, at 70, published his first book Stories that Rhyme and Sometimes Amuse. Two years later, this past May, he published his second book Stories that Amuse and Sometimes Rhyme. He kept track of where his books were sold and who contacted him directly to purchase his books. He knew for certain his books made it throughout Canada as well as the United States, England, Australia, Netherlands and Japan. It brought Terry great joy and pleasure being recognized with numerous poetry awards and the publishing of his rhyming stories in various publications across Canada and the UK.

Our loss is deep. It was Terry’s wish not to have family and friends travel during the winter months to share a story or two and a glass of wine, so last honours will be held on April 9 in Kelowna BC (details to be announced later).

Joyce May Skow (née Perron) of Cranbrook, BC passed away peacefully at home on Friday, January 24, 2020.

Joyce was born in Almonte, Lanark Co., Ontario on May 29, 1932 to Delta (nee Van Dusen) and Lionel Perron. She was raised at several sections along the Ontario Northland Railway, where her father was employed.  In 1943 the family moved to Noranda, Quebec, where Joyce was educated and worked nine years for the same railway as her father had.  She was married to Thomas Yandon in 1958.  They had two children, Wayne and Naomi. They lived in Rossport, Ontario before moving west (which had been Joyce’s childhood dream) to Sparwood in 1970. While there, Joyce wrote weekly articles for the Crowsnest Clarion and was an Avon representative.

Joyce met her second husband, Richard (Dick) Larsen Skow, in Sparwood and they were married in Cranbrook on June 25, 1977. Joyce worked for the Federal Government at the Canada Employment Centre for 17 years– she was a proud union representative for them.  She retired in 1995.  Joyce and Dick lived for 29 years in Moyie, moving to Cranbrook in 2007.

Joyce enjoyed travel with Dick and she spoke often of their trips to Europe, the U.S.A., and cruises through the Panama Canal, the East and West Caribbean, and Alaska.

Throughout her life, Joyce had many passions:  she was an avid reader, loved all things Avon, was a talented painter, and together with her long time friend, Teresa Pearson, she spent untold hours creating needlepoint artworks.

Joyce was predeceased by her parents, Lionel and Delta Perron; her beloved husband, Richard (Dick) Skow; sister Dwyla; brother Brian and her son, Wayne Yandon.  She is survived by her daughter Naomi Northey, and four step children, Beth (Stu, deceased) Cerny, Doug (Dianne) Skow, Jim (Dolores) Skow, Art (Pat) Skow; her grandchildren, Craig (Missy),  Keith (Fiona), Richard (Stacey), Crystal (Karl), Kirsten,  Rachel (Josh), Lewis, Byron, Jesse, Jenna (Kyle), Jaida, and Naiwa; and great grandchildren Kaden, Aviya, Hailey, Amelia, Owen, Michael and Aliyah. Joyce will be greatly missed by her circle of friends, most especially Terry George and her dice buddies at the Eagles.

A memorial service will be held at the Fraternal Order Of Eagles, 715 Kootenay St N, Cranbrook, BC, on February 1, 2020, starting at 1 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations to The Heart & Stroke Foundation or the Canadian Cancer Society are appreciated.

Stefan “Steve” Erwin Kloos
October 20, 1929 ~ January 23, 2020
It is with great sadness and sense of loss that the family of Stefan Kloos announce his passing on January 23, 2020. Stefan was 90 years of age.
Stefan “Steve” was born in Transylvania, Romania and at age 15, with his family, fled to Austria during the second world war. He was raised in Wels, Austria, earned an Agricultural degree in Vienna where in the mid 1950’s he met the love of his life, Maria. They loved to dance in the Viennese ball rooms, but it was the allure of adventure and opportunity in far away places that fired his passion. He traveled to Canada as part of his agricultural degree practicum and landed in Brisco, B.C. Through words in letters he described this wild, newfound nirvana and asked Maria to take a leap of faith and join him to create a new life. She arrived in Calgary, Alberta in October 1957 with one large suitcase and eager anticipation. They married that October and started their partnership in a one room cabin in Brisco. It had electricity, but no running water or inside “facilities”. With limited proficiency in the English language, everyday was a new adventure. It was a far-flung change from Viennese ball rooms, but love knows no boundaries. Steve worked long days in the logging industry, they hunted, built their own first home, had three children within five years, had flourishing gardens and affirmed that Canada was the land of opportunity that would be forever their home.
At age 35, Steve went to trade school and received his automotive mechanic ticket after which they went on to purchase Lake Auto Service. They owned and operated it as a successful family business for more than 40 years.
During those years the family skied at Panorama and hiked almost every mountain there was in the Columbia Valley and beyond. Maria and Steve were very active in the hiking club with ample adventures and stories that involved many local families. Mount Nelson was the most noteworthy of those adventures and Steve, coaxing many friends and family, had climbed it 14 times, the last time at age 72. In 1986, with his two sons, 5’9” Steve carried a 6’ cross to the top of the Mount Nelson which still stands signalling a landmark to climbers that they’ve made it to its peak. They enjoyed skiing with their children and grandchildren till age 75 and in later years, gardening was their passion. Maria and Steve were known for their commitment to early morning walks and were still seen on their route these past few years.
Steve will be lovingly remembered for his work ethic, commitment to his family, community and passion for leaving both better than he found it.
Steve is survived by the love of his life, Maria his wife of 63 years, his daughter Marion (Marcel) LaBrie, their family Justin, Erin, Raedyn LaBrie and Tyler, Deanna, Calum LaBrie, his son Harald (Samantha) Kloos and their family Sarah and Leona Kloos, and Barb, Nicole and Blair Kloos. He was predeceased by his son Erwin Kloos.
At Steve’s request there will be no funeral service or celebration of life. His final wish for all would be to take a walk, hike a mountain, care for this country but mostly love your family.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society https://hsf.donorportal.ca/Donation/Donation, a charity of ones choice or Summit Trail Makers Society. summittrailmakers@gmail.com

Ronald Victor Clarke, QC
With heavy hearts we announce the peaceful passing of Ron Clarke of Windermere, B.C., on Thursday, January 30th, 2020 at the age of 83.
Along with his loving wife Rosemary of 43 years, Ron is survived by his four stepchildren, Bruce (Celia), Brian (Tiffany), Shana and Kathleen, five grandchildren Chad, Daniel, Bryn, Mackenzie and Jorja and two sisters Joan and Shirley. Ron was predeceased by his parents, Edith and Victor Clarke.
Ron was born in Montreal, Quebec on January 6th, 1937. He received his BA from Dalhousie University in 1957 and Bachelor of Laws in 1960. After Articles with Macleod Dixon, he was admitted to the Law Society of Alberta in 1961 and awarded a Queen’s Counsel in January of 1998.
After a fun filled few years of bachelorhood, he bit the bullet and bravely jumped with both feet into marriage with Rosemary and her four children. Following work on Oil & Gas matters for several years he switched his focus to Condominium Law. In 1966 he formed a very successful law partnership with his longtime friend Derek Jones and in 1969 they were joined by Vic Burstall and Art Coady. He semi-retired in 1982 then reentered law practice in association with Moore, O’Connor, Martin, Iredale & Maitland, moved to Donahue Rondeau and then carried on a private legal practice in association with Heather Bonnycastle. Ron finally retired from active practice in 1998 and in April 2002 he and his wife retired out to the Windermere Valley where he occasionally carried on legal and business activities on a limited scale. He finally put down his pen in April of 2016.
Ron had many passions throughout different stages of his life including a love of fine wines, Cuban cigars, the US Civil War and single malt scotch. And…. moving to the Windermere Valley also opened a whole new world for him as he took up golf, became active is several environmental groups and thoroughly enjoyed his “coffee with the boys” almost daily.
One of his greatest joys were the yearly cruises with his wife to sunny climates and his “bucket list” freighter trip around the world.
A Celebration of Life will be held in Windermere later in the Spring. He will be buried near Kingston, Ontario in a family columbarium.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

With sadness we announce the passing of Larry Dale Symbalisty on February 2, 2020 in Cranbrook, B.C.
Larry was born in Manitoba Canada in 1955 and eventually made his way to the Kootenay area. Larry lived in Trail B.C., and Creston B.C., before moving to Cranbrook in 2014.
Upon moving to Cranbrook, Larry became a well known face in the community. Larry was always up for a conversation over a cup of coffee with anyone he met. Larry had a great sense of humor that was evident in his playful nature. You could often find Larry on his scooter around town looking for bottles to recycle. He enjoyed doing this so much to pass his time and make a little extra spending money that his neighbours would bring him their recycling.
Larry preferred to be busy, he was happy to have his paper shredding job at Blade Runner where he was very proud to have recently retired from. Larry enjoyed western movies and antiques such as clocks and radios. Larry loved wearing and collecting wrist and pocket watches. Larry loved a warm pair of gloves and a warm jacket. Larry was also a man of many hats, but his favorite attire was western wear with a snappy new cowboy hat and pair of cowboy boots. Larry was loved by many people in this community and the communities he lived in previously. Larry’s charming personality, warm smile and loving nature will be greatly missed but always remembered by all that have had the pleasure of meeting him.
There will be a service in honour of Larry on Wednesday, February 12, 2020 at 1:00pm at McPherson Funeral Services, in Cranbrook. B.C.
