James William Sharpe

“Jim”
1935 – 2019

It is with heavy hearts we announce the peaceful passing of James William “Jim” Sharpe on Wednesday, February 6, 2019, with his family by his side.

Jim was born March 3, 1935 in Yorkton, SK to Lloyd and Eleanor (nee Heslop) Sharpe. The family moved to Toronto, ON and lived there for five years when Lloyd was overseas serving his country in WWII. After the war they lived in Saskatoon, SK for two years and eventually settled in Weyburn, SK where Jim graduated high school.

In 1953 Jim enrolled in UBC in Vancouver, BC to study Architectural Engineering. It was there he met the love of his life, Louisa “Lisa” Pentland and they were married October 8, 1956. They raised their three children in Vancouver while Jim worked as a BC Land Surveyor. He obtained his commission in 1959 and in 1962 he started Sharpe and Parnell Land Surveyors. In 1964 they amalgamated with Underhill & Underhill Surveyors and Jim became a partner in the company. His very successful career took him all over the province of BC and into the Yukon.

While on a project for BC Hydro, Jim discovered the East Kootenay region in 1979 and fell in love with the rivers, mountains and pace of life. Jim and Lisa decided to move to the Cranbrook area in 1980 where he continued his career as a professional surveyor. Jim’s integrity and hard work were key factors in his professional career and he mentored many young surveyors and developers. His knowledge of the Condominium Act was legendary and he was often consulted upon by various agencies, lawyers and developers for information on strata developments. In 2000 Jim ‘retired’ and sold his business to the Focus Corporation however he remained as a professional consultant and mentor for many years. Jim was also Past President and Life Member of the Corporation of BC Land Surveyors.

Jim and Lisa moved from their rural home in Mayook to Marysville in 2006, where they could be closer to family and friends. They loved to travel and saw much of the world but Hawaii was their favourite place to unwind and they visited there many times. The family also enjoyed their cabin on Mayne Island in the BC Gulf Islands and they took many ski trips in BC during the winter. Jim was a proficient wood worker and he loved to golf. He also was a master wine maker and family and friends enjoyed many years of Sharpe wine. Other activities he enjoyed included curling, reading and mastering the BBQ.

Jim is survived by his loving wife Lisa, their children Mary (Ken) Green, Eric (Doreen) Sharpe and Jean (George) Terpsma; grandchildren: Jeffrey (Kayley), Lisa (Jared), Kristen (Rob), James (Madi), Heather, Blake, Kate (Evan) and Doug (Leanne), and three great grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother John (Joan) Sharpe, sister-in-law Trudy Friesen, numerous cousins and nieces and nephews. Jim is predeceased by his parents Lloyd and Eleanor and his sisters Mavis Pearson and Sunni Glaze.

The family would like to thank Dr. Nishi for her wonderful care that went above and beyond expectations and Dr. Buddo and the Kimberley Home Care Nurses for their compassionate care.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, February 23, 2019 at Bootleg Gap Golf Course Clubhouse in Kimberley, BC. Please come dressed in casual golf or Hawaiian attire.

Glen Irwin Peever

October 22, 1940 – February 9, 2019

On Saturday, February 9th, 2019 Glen Peever passed away peacefully at home, in his sleep, following a 10 month battle with his latest cancer. He was diagnosed with Esophageal Cancer last March and continued his life and enjoyment of writing and reading almost to the very end.

Glen was born just outside Sudbury, Ontario to a family that would eventually number 5 boys and 1 girl. His early years were spent at Camp Borden and Barrie, Ontario. He attended and graduated from le College Militaire Royale de St. Jean and the Royal Military College of which he was inordinately proud because it gave him an excellent education, and because he always maintained that any success he had as a manager was due to the lessons learned at RMC, and in the PPCLI where he served for three years. Most of Glen’s working life was spent in management in the life insurance business, and in food services especially at Sunshine Village, Alberta. In 1985, Glen and Barbara were married and moved west to the mountains that became significant to them all the years that remained. Glen would maintain for his whole life that the peace he found with Barbara, and in the mountains, became the rock upon which he built his happiness. He tried, from the day they were married, to spend every moment by Barbara’s side, and to see one of them without the other was always a strange sight. Such was their love for each other.

Glen was predeceased by his father, Percy Kenneth, his mother, Katie Helena (nee Cook), his sister, Evelyn Periard, and his brother, Walter Arnold.

He is survived by his siblings Roy in Moncton, Grant in Barrie, and Ron in Stouffville. Glen is also survived by his beloved wife, Barbara (nee Stoltz), his son Craig (Lisa), daughter Janet (Mike) Ifabumuyi, and grandchildren, Cameron, Griffin, Liam, Haille, and Brendan.

A Celebration of Glen’s Life will be held on Sunday, February 24, 2019 at the Cranbrook Golf Course from 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm.

Another Celebration of Life will be held in Canmore, AB and Ontario at a later date.

“I was blessed to have been able to care for him at home in our sanctuary. He was and always will be my forever love.”

Memorial Contributions can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, British Columbia and Yukon Division Office, 565 West 10th Avenue, Vancouver, BC, V5Z 4J4.

Obituary for Colin James Campbell

Colin James Campbell

August 18, 1947 to February 19, 2019

Colin was born in Maple Creek, SA but raised in the West Kootenays here in BC.  His young life took him to Calgary, Penticton and then to Kamloops where he stopped for 14 years.  There he met the love of his life and his best friend Jane Campbell, whom he married in 1973.  Colin started his career in Financial Planning with Manulife in Kamloops with a couple of years off to run his own business selling cash registers and office supplies.  After 12 years of marriage and the arrival of their son Sean they moved to the lower Mainland for 8 years.  Colin continued in Financial Planning for a short time until he realized he didn’t know enough people and went to be the Manager of a retirement home for Christian Scientists for 6 years.  In 1995 the decision was made to move to Cranbrook and open his own office known today as Guidance Planning Strategies.  He was blessed to have had two wonderful partners during that time, Larry Johnson and Karla Graff.  Colin and Jane resided in Cranbrook until Colin’s passing ending a wonderful marriage of 45 years.

Colin was raised as a Christian Scientist by his mother and grandmother.  He was a member of the Mother Church in Boston Massachusetts for 53 years.

Colin was very active in supporting his community, he believed strongly in giving back.  He was introduced to Rotary at the age of 8 when his Step-Father’s Rotary Club in Fruitvale BC hired Colin to mow the lawn at the Rotary Park.  His Uncle Jimmy told him someday, someone will ask you to join a service club and the only answer is “yes”.  Colin developed that idea to the point that in Rotary when you are asked to join that is your last chance to say no.  He had been a Rotarian for 41 years.  Colin helped to build 3 clubs, was president of 2 and the closest to his heart was the Sunrise Rotary Club of Cranbrook.  His biggest project while a member was being the chairman of the “Champions on Ice”.

Colin was also a member of the Masonic Lodge for 35 years where he served as Worshipful Master in Cranbrook and was a supporting member to his wife Jane in the Eastern Star serving as Worthy Patron for 5 years.

He volunteered and supported many programs of the Chamber of Commerce, the Downtown Business Association and the Key City Theatre.  Two of his largest community undertakings were being the Chairman of the Canada Cup of Curling in 2011 and the Co-chair of Cranbrook’s bid for Kraft Hockeyville.

Colin was a devoted and involved father participating as a baseball coach, Beaver, Cub and Scout leader and most importantly, good friend to his son Sean.

He and his best friend Jane were joined at the hip.  If he was ever anywhere other than work without her the question always was “Where’s Jane?”  They enjoyed golfing, fishing, gardening, woodworking and travelling together.   Colin was an accomplished pianist and often played in their home for Jane. He came close but did not complete his bucket list goal of visiting all the National Parks in Western North America.  They had so much fun together

He was a frustrated golfer, an avid fly fisherman, a prolific flytyer, a very talented carpenter, a knowledgeable and well-read history buff and a prolific writer.

One of his greatest joys was sharing his experience with other people.  Many young business persons in Cranbrook benefited from his mentorship.  Of all the titles Colin held “Friend” was his most treasured.

As Martin Luther said: “I don’t worry about the shouting of the violent, corrupt people, the dishonest ones, and the lack of ethics: I worry about the silence of the good people!”  A good person went silent on February 19th.

Colin was predeceased by his mother Evelyn Leckett and his father William Campbell.  He is survived by his wife Jane Campbell, his son Sean Campbell (Lisa Neshine) of Lethbridge and his half-brother Alan Langford of Toronto as well as many, many cousins and an army of friends.

A celebration of Colin’s life will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday March 16th at the Colombo Hall in Cranbrook, BC. The family ask for donations in lieu of flowers to be made to the Rotary International Foundation as this was Colin’s favorite charity.  See any Rotarian to make your donation.

Dale was an honourable man of faith and family. Everyone who met him was left with a lasting impression of kindness and caring this man shared.

Dale grew up in Cardston, Alberta and met the love of his life and eternal partner Rea Joyce Butler whom he married in the Cardston Temple on April 12th, 1950. Those lovebirds created a wonderful and still growing legacy of five children, Corey (wife Debbie), Mona Rea (husband Bart), Robert “Bob” (wife Fiona), Darcy (wife Ruby), Tammy (husband Steve). WAYNE DOUGLAS OTTMAN

October 21, 1953 – February 19, 2019

Wayne moved with his family to Cranbrook in 1965 and fell in love with the countryside there. The mountains became his home for the next 53 years and he was thrilled to live amongst them.

He hunted, fished and camped as much as he could and made a living at the sawmill when needed.

While living almost all his adult life in the tiny town of Moyie, he made many friends and will be fondly remembered and missed by nearly all who remain.

His last decade was spent by the river where he could be found sitting on the porch listening to the frogs and watching the birds. Deer and the occasional bear graced his steps as well.

Wayne was predeceased by his parents and by the love of his life Donean.

He is at peace at last and we can remember our gentle giant (sometimes a crazy and wild giant) with all the love that younger siblings hold for their oldest brother.

He is now the wind on the mountain and the wild bugle of the Elk. He is gone, but never forgotten by Donna (Don), Lyall (Stephanie), Wanda (Bruce), and Holly (Spud). He will be missed by many nieces and nephews and he will especially be missed by his daughters Melanie and Michelle and his grandsons Devon and Cory. Wayne was affectionately known as Grandpa Bang.

He requested no service; instead there will be a gathering of family and friends on the mountain in warmer months to send him on the wind.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made in memory of Wayne to the Kootenay Wildlife Heritage Fund, P.O. Box 100, Kimberley B.C., V1A 2Y5.

Joseph “Mel” GAGNON

JULY 29, 1948 ~ MARCH 2, 2019 (AGE 70)

On Saturday, March 2nd, our beloved husband, father and grandfather, Mel Gagnon, passed away at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital at the age of 70 years. Joseph Hermel “Mel” Gagnon was born in St. Andre, NB on July 29, 1948 to parents Romeo and Jeanne (Caron) Gagnon.

Mel is survived by his wife of 47 years, Nicole (Desjardins), his son Michel (Andrea Gonnely) of Elkford, BC his daughter Sonya (Leonard) Hammond of Sparwood, BC, and the precious grandchildren he absolutely adored: Nicholas, Paul and Katelyn Gagnon, Madelyn Smith and Danni Hammond. Also left to mourn his passing are 4 sisters: Gisele Beardsley (Murray) of Grand Falls, NB, Diane Gagnon (Robert Roy) of Montreal, QC, and Marise Gagnon and Christianne Gagnon (Alan Stairs) of Quebec, QC, 3 brothers: Jean-Guy “John” (Murielle Theriault), Gilles-Marie “Bill”(Lise Bellefleur) of Saint-Andre and Jean-Maurice (Jacqueline Fraser) of Grand Falls, NB as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, his infant brother Jean-Francois, and his brother-in-law Roger Goulet

Mel was an outgoing, friendly man, always willing to lend a helping hand whenever and wherever needed. His gentle heart and fun-loving spirit made children and animals flock to him instantly …. the “Pied Piper”. A finishing carpenter by trade, Mel sustained serious work-related injuries in his mid thirties that changed his role to “Mr. Mom”. While he was a meticulous carpenter with an eye for detail, he was also an amazing stay-at-home dad and excellent chef! Family was always first and foremost in Mel’s life. Many of his happiest moments were spent at the family cottage in New Brunswick, fishing with family and friends.

Mel and Nicole lived in Grand Falls and Quispamsis, NB until the urge to be closer to their children and grandchildren led to their move to the Elk Valley in June 2015. Being able to actively participate in their lives meant the world to him …. and them! Mel had a heart of gold and hands of steel and compassion. May he rest in peace and all of us recount why we are all better for having known him.
