Obituary for Cameron Ratcliffe

Cameron Ratcliffe “Cam”

On March 9, 2016 the world lost an amazing soul. We all lost an amazing man.

Cam Ratcliffe was a man who loved simple things. He walked his dogs and loved to read books. All through his life he was an athlete, a redneck philosopher, an outdoorsman, an artist and a dreamer. Above all else he was gracious, loving and had a sense of humour like no other. If you are one of the fortunate ones he called his friend, you are blessed and have felt the power of his gentle touch.

As demonstrated in Cam’s own words no other has accepted his destiny with such grace and integrity. “It is coming up on seven years that I have been living with my cancer now. I’m thankful to be alive. I am thankful to have learned to live more bravely. I look forward to whatever time I have left, and believe each day will be more fulfilling than the last if I continue to learn, be accepting, and try my best. Enjoy this little insight into the things that excite me and touch me in all the ways that life can.”

One of Cam’s goals for those left behind was not to feel the sadness of his death, but rather to remember the lessons that he leaves behind, to be accepting, loving and to show kindness always. In his passing at the age of fifty, Cam came to completely accept his cancer diagnosis – he left this world with great peace and utter joy in his heart. His last hours were spent laughing, reminiscing, joyously crying and sharing this with those he loved most.

Cam will be remembered by the loving members of his family: Bonnie (wife); Cody, David and Lynden (sons); Bernie (dear friend); Heather (mother); Kelly, Marnie [Clifford](sisters); Spencer (nephew); Delainey (niece); Mae (grandmother); aunts, uncles and cousins. Cam was predeceased by Robert Wayne Ratcliffe (father) and Gordon Rice (step-father).

His service will be at 11:00 am on Tuesday, March 15, 2016 at McPherson Funeral Home in Cranbrook.

Edgerton “Edge” HALLADAY

September 20, 1937 – March 5, 2016

Edge Halladay Sr

… a strong, gentle husband, father, grandfather who is now resting peacefully. Edge passed Saturday, March 5 at the age of 78. He fought a battle with cancer since 1997. He succumbed to his 7th battle against cancer. Through it all one of his favourite things to do was bug the nurses and make them laugh. He loved nothing more than frequent visits with his family. Edge left a lasting impression on everyone that had the privilege of having him in their lives. He was quick witted. You would never leave his side without a tear and a smile from laughing. The ones who got the most attention over the years were his dogs. Oh he loved his dogs. Edge and Norma would rescue dogs, clean them up and find a home for them but then Edgie would always want to keep them. Well he is now running around in heaven, pain free chasing all of his dogs that have been waiting for him. His little dog Lucy passed 3 days before he did. Wow she was for sure going with him. Another of Edge’s great loves was building & creating. He was so smart and so talented. He loved carpentry and was skilled at every trade. He spent a lot of time in his huge workshop. He also lived to camp, fish & he loved to walk in the bush. He always took his dogs to the creek behind their place.
He was born September 20, 1937 in Thorsby, AB. He was one of 12 children. At the age of 4 his family moved to Creston, BC where he lived until he left home at the age of 16. He worked on the rigs and other jobs until he found his place in Weyburn, Sk where he met the love of his life, Norma McFadden. They were married on July 5th, 1957. They enjoyed 58 1/2 years of love and fun together. They were a power couple. In 1980, Edge acquired employment at the Fording River Coal mine in Elkford, BC. A big move from the farm in Sk where Edge farmed and worked in a creamery for 20+ yrs. He always loved the mountains. He was home. Once he retired from the mine, Edge & Norma built their own place on a small acreage in Grasmere/Rooseville where he spent his final years. Edge is survived by his one true love, Norma Halladay, his 4 kids, Teresa Halladay (Dave Purvis), Rob Halladay (Diana), Diane Halladay (Ken Dmytriw), Darren Halladay (Tracey), Grandchildren, Jeff Dyck (Crystal), Mitchell Dyck, Steven Halladay (Tracey), Aaron Halladay-Dmytriw, Brandi Halladay (Jon Dustin), Edge Halladay Jr (Larissa), Great Grandchildren, Kyra & Mekaela Kallies (Dyck), Jordyn Halladay (Steve), Savannah & Liam Halladay (Edge Jr). Edge is predeceased by his parents, Conrad Webster Halladay, Frances Halladay and his 11 brothers and sisters Florence, Ellen, Wenonah, Cy, Lillian, Beatrice, Wilbur, Mildred, Margaret, Richard, Sybil.
The family sends out heartfelt thank you’s to the staff at the Elk Valley Hospital: Dr Lowen, the Nursing Staff, the cleaning staff. You all provided such comfort and caring over the years and especially in the final days.

Beek, Cornelis Neill

Apr 16, 1927 – Mar 12, 2016

Cornelis Beek (“Neill”,”Kees”) passed away in the early hours of March 12, 2016, one month shy of his 89th birthday. He is survived and mourned by his wife of 59 years, Laura (Joyce) Beek (nee Lee); daughters Lesley (Winston) Adams of Regina Sk; Lynne (Ernie) Lalonde of West Kelowna, BC and family Kyle Lalonde (Piper) of New Westminster, BC and Danielle Lalonde (Anders) of Melbourne, Australia; and son Kees (Louanne) Beek and family Alex, Noah and Maddie, all of Cranbrook BC.

Dad was predeceased by his parents and his two brothers Frans and Jacobus, both of The Hague, Netherlands.

Kees Sr was born in The Hague, Netherlands, April 16, 1927.  The eldest of three boys, he grew up in the family’s flower shop until the onset of WWII.  After the war, he emigrated to Canada, arriving at Pier 21 in March, 1952.

He worked as a farm labourer, and then as a porter in the Brandon Mental Health hospital.  Dad’s life long love of singing led him to start a choir at the hospital, which was well-received by patients and staff alike.  He then completed training to become a lab and X-ray technician.  Dad met and married our mother, Joyce, the youngest daughter of his landlady(Elsie Lee) in Dauphin, Manitoba, Feb 9, 1957.  In Dauphin, Dad participated in church choir as well as musical theatre  (“Annie Get Your Gun”).

We moved to Yorkton, SK in 1967, where Dad pursued a career hospital administration.  In1971, the family moved to Regina, where he worked until his retirement.  He was very proud of the Diabetic cross-matching protocols he helped to develop.

In 1999,  Mom and Dad followed their son, Kees, to Cranbrook, BC, where they set down new roots and enjoyed a warmer clime in their retirement years.

The church was always very important in his life, sitting on church councils, participating in bible studies and singing in choirs. During their years in Regina, Dad very much enjoyed singing under the direction of Jack Partridge in the choir at Regina First Presbyterian.

To say that Dad was definite, about almost everything, would be an understatement.  He didn’t believe in grey, only black and white.  Although he sought out solitude, he was always sociable and charismatic in a crowd. Everyone always remembered the tall Dutchman, who walked with purpose.

Funeral service will take place Saturday March 19th, 2016,11 am at Knox Presbyterian Church, 2100 – 3rd St. S. Cranbrook.

The family would like to thank staff members of the East Kootenay Regional Hospital. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.
